Adult ADHD Assessment: What to Expect
If you think you might have ADHD, knowing what to expect can make booking feel easier. Here is what to expect from an adult ADHD assessment at ADHD & Beyond Medical in Bondi Junction and Maroubra.
Before your appointment
We may ask you to complete some questionnaires before you come in. These help us understand your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. If you can, please bring:
-
Any previous reports or assessments
-
A list of your current medications
-
Details of any other health conditions
Some people also find it helpful to bring a family member or partner, or to ask someone who knew you as a child to share their observations.
What to expect during your adult ADHD assessment
Your first appointment is face to face and takes up to an hour. Dr Hiran will:
- Talk with you about your current symptoms and how they affect work, study, relationships and daily life
- Ask about your history, including your childhood, as ADHD symptoms usually begin early in life
- Review your questionnaires and any reports you bring
- Ask about other things that can cause similar symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems or substance useCheck your general health, which may include your blood pressure, heart rate and weight
After your assessment
Dr Hiran will explain what he has found. An assessment doesn't always lead to an ADHD diagnosis. Sometimes another explanation fits better, and we'll talk you through your options.
If ADHD is diagnosed, we'll discuss a treatment plan with you. This may include medication where clinically appropriate, as well as other supports such as psychological therapy or practical strategies. Any ADHD medication is prescribed in line with NSW prescribing requirements.
If you would benefit from specialist input, Dr Hiran can share your care with psychiatrists at My ADHD Centre at Bondi.
Ongoing care
ADHD is a long-term condition. If you start treatment, you'll have regular review appointments to check how it's working and make changes if needed. Follow-ups can be by telehealth where clinically appropriate.
